1. Create genuinely great content for your readers – not for the search engines. Search algorithms are becoming very sophisticated and can now usually tell if a site is trying to manipulate them.
2. Update your website regularly. Search engines love sites that are continually growing as they are often more relevant and current than a static site.
3. If your site lends itself well to images, Google’s Image Search feature can be a powerful way to generate traffic. The trick is to include your page’s main keyword in the image’s file name. In many cases, this simple technique can help increase your search engine traffic.
4. If your site focuses on products, try featuring product-focused content pages with one product per page. This can be particularly effective when combined with search-targeted advertising.
5. Learn a bit about SEO (Search Engine Optimization), or hire a professional to optimize your site. There are a ton of free articles about this online.

Chango offers a Publisher Referral Program to reward you for helping expand our publisher network. Every time you refer a new publisher and they are approved for Chango SearchSpots, you will earn 10% of what the referral earns each month for 15 months. The referral makes the same revenue that they would normally and you have an opportunity to generate residual income for your efforts.
Read our Publisher Guidelines to ensure you are focusing on sites that meet our minimum qualifications. Do NOT sign up on behalf of a potential publisher – they must apply directly using your referral link and will be required to confirm their email address before their application will be considered. Abusing this rule will get you banned from the program and you will forfeit any future earnings.

Chango SearchSpot ads only display to search traffic from the U.S. and Canada (this is typically a small percentage of total traffic). The alternate ad acts as a fallback in the event that SearchSpots is not able to show an ad. Doing this maximizes your page’s revenue potential by always displaying an ad in the allocated space.
Without an alternate ad in place, nothing will be shown. The ad actually vanishes, and the page is reformatted so that it’s impossible to tell the ad was even there. This can be very handy if you want to display ads only to your search traffic. Some Publishers add an additional ad unit on pages with a lot of search traffic because it helps increase revenue without impacting their regular readers.
The most popular alternate ad option is Google AdSense, but other ad networks and affiliate ads are also possible. Critical to your success is ensuring the ad size is exactly the same size. Nothing hurts your CTR more than ads that aren’t displaying properly, not to mention your viewer’s impression of your site.

You can change the color scheme of SearchSpot ads to match the look and feel of your page. Experts agree that in most cases, ads are more effective when they blend into a page. For websites with a dark background, a contrasting color can also be effective.
You can customize your SearchSpots color scheme during the ad setup process. Usually it makes sense to choose colors which are already in your site’s color scheme. If you have any questions about customization, please contact searchspots@chango.com.

Chango SearchSpots offer a variety of ad sizes & formats to choose from, so it will be easy to find a format that fits naturally within your pages. Generally speaking, readers prefer wider ads over narrow vertical skyscrapers because they’re easier to read.
Well placed ads can significantly increase your revenue. The formats we’ve found to be most effective are: the 728×90 Leaderboard, the 336×280 Large Rectangle, the 300×250 Medium Rectangle, and the 160×600 Wide Skyscraper. These work particularly well with AdSense set as the fallback alternative ad for non-search traffic. For a custom ad size request, please contact searchspots@chango.com.
It is critical that you choose a format that fits well with the content of your web page. Never sacrifice a positive viewing experience for optimal ad placement – you want to keep your readers happy!

No one enjoys visiting a site overburdened with ads – it looks unprofessional and immediately turns many people off. Many of these cluttered sites would likely increase their ad revenue simply by reducing the amount of advertising on the page.
This may seem obvious but it’s often overlooked: Make sure you are placing Chango’s SearchSpot ads on pages which have a significant amount of search engine traffic from the U.S. or Canada. Our ads typically have a higher than average CTR but if they’re not being seen, you won’t get the clicks.
One of the most important factors that impacts your revenue is where the ads appear on your web pages. In a pay-per-click (PPC) model such as Chango SearchSpots, the click-through-rate (CTR) is your best indicator of effective placement. Your CTR is the percentage of visitors who have been exposed to the ad (impressions) and then clicked on it (clicks).
A reasonable CTR for well-placed SearchSpot ads ranges from 1% – 4%. Testing different spots on the page can considerably increase your CTRs. Ads that appear above the fold (viewable without scrolling) usually outperform ones towards the bottom of a page. The primary exception to this is the spot immediately following the article.
